Cyprus Rescues 60 Syrian Migrants from Boat

Nicosia, January 24 (Reuters)

Sixty Syrian migrants were rescued from a small boat off the coast of Cyprus on Wednesday after being stranded at sea for several days.

Asylum Seekers Face Challenges

The migrants, who included women and children, were taken to the southern port of Limassol for medical attention. They will now apply for asylum in Cyprus, authorities said.

Cyprus has become a popular destination for asylum seekers in recent years, due to its proximity to war-torn Syria. However, the country has struggled to cope with the influx of migrants, and its asylum system is under strain.

The rescued migrants will add to the more than 12,000 Syrians who have sought refuge in Cyprus since 2011. The majority of them have been granted asylum, but many face challenges in rebuilding their lives after fleeing the conflict in their home country.
